My thoughts on the Olympics opening ceremony

First off - I've been watching a lot of olympics. Fun times.

I didn't watch the opening ceremony but I heard the controversy about the little girl. You know, the one who wasn't cute enough to be seen and the one who was pretty but couldn't sing well enough to perform. Everyone got in an uproar about the whole thing concerned for the self esteem of these 2 poor little girls and outraged that the Chinese government was trying to present the "ideal" image of a young Chinese girl.

Okay people. Focus for a minute. China does NOT have a great reputation for respect for human rights (or what are considered to be human rights by Western society if you want to go there). If you want to be outraged, focus on the masses, not on the 2 little girls. More importantly, as (in my opinion) Canadians are particularly quick to do, we've all decided that we're morally better. We wouldn't do such a thing. I fully agree with this. We wouldn't. We (again, in my opinion) would have rejected the singer for not being cute enough and rejected the performer for not singing well enough. We would have chosen the secret door number 3 who was not quiet as visually ideal and not quite as wonderful a singer but who did well at both. Does this really make us better? When it's our turn and we have, let's say, dancers performing at our opening ceremony, are we really only going to look for the best dancers? No, we'll chose those who portray both quality dancing and the image we'd like to project. All the world's a brand; and all the men and women merely logos.
