We hemmed and hawed about getting the new reusable grocery bags. Particularly because I’m the one who’s more interesting in greening our lives and I’m the one who’s less likely to do the grocery shopping. We finally broke down and bought a bag and got one for free. So far, so good. They’re the President’s Choice bags which are easy to throw in the machine and a good size. The 2 downsides are: the clerks at the grocery store are not particularly good with loading them – as in, you put them next to them and start loading and they still put your stuff in plastic bags or put so much in them that you can list them. Also, you may pack them up to take, let’s say…card making stuff, to a friend’s house and then not unpack it.
We also bought 2 bins. These are particularly great because they’re good for carrying stuff other than groceries – like Christmas presents – that don’t fit nicely into bags. They add an extra entertainment factor since they have labels on them that say “Bin Shopping” and “Bin paid for”. Since Dash likes to sniff or lick them, there are a lot of “Bin licking” jokes made at our place. There have also been some “bin annoyed because my husband keeps leaving them in the hallway” issues.

Dave and I have been using reusable grocery bags for a while now and generally like them a lot.
But, just like you mentioned, our #1 complaint is that stores haven't trained staff on how to fill them. We have the Sobey's bags, which are bigger than the Loblaws ones, and they ALWAYS stuff them to the top or put all the canned goods in one bag - so they weigh a ton. And we have to walk several blocks to get home!
We always bring extra and just repack them ourselves. But it would be nice if the staff grew some brains . . .
I also love them for non-grocery shopping. When out running errands for not-so-heavy stuff, like pillows or clothes, you can fit a whole day's shopping in one bag! Lovely.
I should have added that my awesome friend gave me a reusable bag that folds into a very, very tiny bag which is great because I never remember to bring bags for anything other than grocery shopping and the grocery bags are fairly bulky to just carry around.
